Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) has released a new image processing chip, the AD9271, which is easy to combine with convenience and high performance. The AD9271 integrates a complete 8-channel ultrasound receiver on a single chip. This high level of integration allows medical device designers to reduce the signal path size of portable ultrasound systems by 50% and reduce power consumption by 25%, consistently meeting the noise levels and other performance levels required by critical care.In particular, the AD9271 analog front end (AFE) is replaced by a single chip containing a low noise amplifier (LNA), a variable gain amplifier (VGA), an anti-aliasing filter (AAF), and a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Previous multi-chip discrete solutions and their requirements for Internet and package size.
The AD9271 is targeted at the medical imaging market and is suitable for low power, small size and ease of use. The AD9271 AFE-equipped ADC consumes only 115 mW and 175 mW per channel at 10 MSPS and 50 MSPS sampling rates - a 25% reduction over other nearby solutions, allowing for increased channel count without having to increase Battery and power supply. The AD9271 uses an advanced CMOS fabrication process that includes an integrated matrix switch that allows multiple multi-channel configuration options to be supported in continuous wave Doppler mode. This will turn off individual channels to extend battery life. The AD9271 has a variable gain range of 30 dB per channel, and the integrated ADC has a 70 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that is comparable to what was previously possible with a discrete solution.
Like other products in Analog Devices' complete line of high-speed ADCs, the AD9271 has features to help maximize application flexibility and lowest system cost. These features include programmable clocking, data alignment, and digital test pattern generation. The AD9271 also provides an interface to the AD8339. The AD8339 is a four-channel programmable quadrature (I&Q) demodulator with a phase shifter that is ideal for continuous wave Doppler ultrasound systems. The AD9271 also complements Analog Devices' AD7980, AD9704, ADV212 and ADR510, making it the most comprehensive line of products available to all IC manufacturers today for the medical imaging and ultrasound diagnostics market.
Samples are now available for the AD9271 with integrated AFE and volume production is expected in May 2007. The AD9271 is priced at $40/piece to $72/piece in 1,000-piece quantities, depending on the speed rating. The AD9271 is available in a lead-free, 14 mm x 14 mm form factor, 100-pin thin quad flat package (TQFP).
