According to industry news, Sweden's new battery manufacturer, Northvolt, has signed a contract with the local government and will spend about 4 billion euros to build the largest battery factory in Europe. Including Volkswagen, luxury carmakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and other European depots sponsorship of 2.2 billion euros to support Northvolt's plant-building plan.
South Korea's Business Korea reported that the new battery plant will start construction in the second half of 2018, with an estimated capacity of 8GWh in 2020, and the output in 2023 will further double to 32GWh, which exceeds the combined annual capacity of South Korea's LGChem and Samsung SDI. It is understood that the annual production capacity of LGChem battery is 20GWh and that of Samsung SDI is 10GWh.
At the same time, GigaFactory, a battery plant jointly owned by Tesla and Panasonic, plans to increase production capacity to 35GWh next year. In the middle of the year, Tesla CEO Musk also announced that he will look at the world and plans to build an additional four GigaFactorys. The exact location will be announced at the end of the year.
