LED lighting applications need to solve several key technical problems

The situation of solid-state LED lighting is getting brighter and brighter, and its application fields are expanding globally, including indoor and outdoor lighting, automotive interiors, TVs and monitors, backlights for mobile phones and other consumer electronics, and even car headlights.

According to Ella Shum, director of LED market research at market research firm Strategies Unlimited, global packaging high-brightness LED sales surged 93% last year to $10.8 billion. Its growth is mainly due to the backlighting of TVs and monitors as well as mobile devices.

Shum pointed out that although the world is currently interested in using solid-state LED light sources for lighting, the high-brightness LED market accounted for only 8% of total sales last year. But she expects that the field of high-brightness LED lighting will grow by about 39% in 2010-2015.

ElectroniCast Consultants recently published a market research report that LED bulbs consumed in the United States last year were worth $485 million. The company predicts that this number will reach $1.64 billion in 2015 (Figure 1).

LED lighting advantages and disadvantages

LEDs are more popular than other types of light sources, and the reason is not mysterious. According to the US Department of Energy's solid-state lighting research and development program, LEDs have higher performance and longer life than high-intensity gas discharge (HID) bulbs, fluorescent tubes and energy-saving lamps (CFL), halogen lamps and incandescent lamps. .

The maximum performance of a cool white LED is 132 lumens per watt (l/W), while the incandescent lamp has only 15 lumens per watt, with a lifetime of 50,000 and 1,000 hours, respectively. The power consumption of LED lighting is only 20% of incandescent lamps, which is a very important advantage in today's global emphasis on energy saving.

But the higher price is its shortcoming. The cost of the Philips AmbientLED A19 replacement lamp is about $40, while the incandescent lamp does not cost more than $1. The long life and energy saving advantages of LEDs can make up for this shortcoming. It is expected that the cost gap between the two will be reduced to a quarter of the current year.
