Philips: Automotive LED lighting will explode in the next five years

Philips Automotive Lighting is one of the world's largest suppliers of lamps and accessories for the automotive industry. Liu Zhiqiang, Senior Commercial Director of Philips Automotive Lighting, and Han Meng, Manager of Automotive Lighting, Asia Pacific Product Development and Application Center, analyzed automotive LED lighting.

Liu Zhiqiang: Car lighting is the first safety function, no matter what kind of light bulb, it is for safety. In terms of energy conservation and environmental protection, the world is not only promoting energy conservation in the field of automotive lighting, but also in other aspects, and it is good for the environment. Therefore, we also attach great importance to energy conservation and environmental protection. Light bulbs that are now being developed, like LED lights, are moving toward energy saving. In terms of fashion, many automakers now choose lighting functions. Only when they are stylish and different, can they stand out. At today's seminar, the main content of Dr. Han Meng's speech is about LED. We think LED development momentum is good, and it is also the future development direction, in line with the three key points just mentioned.

Han Meng: The choice of products is relatively large. For example, to make a forward light, it can be used in the upper position, under the condition that the environmental requirements are not harsh, use our standard products. We also have specialized products designed for demanding environments.

Liu Zhiqiang: We develop new products, not only for high-end cities, of course, there are many new technologies, we must start from the high-end market, because the amount is not big at first, the cost is high, but our development itself is not only for the high-end market.

In addition, there are differences in the application. The mid-end models also use our LEDs, but the pellets don't have as many high-end cars. The cost pressure of high-end cars is not so great, and the particles are used more. The new products we develop have only a different focus on performance. For example, low-end cars pay more attention to energy conservation. From an application perspective, we have a lot of innovative products, which emphasizes which aspect of performance matches the application best, rather than making a distinction between mid-to-high end.

There is a view that even if the cost of LEDs can continue to decline at the foreseeable rate of Moore's Law, it will take many years to reach the same price as HID lamps. If the cost of the LED family is to be comparable to that of a halogen lamp, it will take a longer period of time.

Han Meng: Compared with traditional industries, LED is a semiconductor technology. Although it is not strictly in accordance with Moore's Law, in the long run, prices will go down. A lot of analysis has been done in the market and we have also made an assessment. It is foreseeable that the price difference between LED and HID will gradually shrink in the next decade. The application of LED lights in mid- to high-end cars will become wider and wider. But for compact or small displacement cars, halogen lamps are still very competitive.

We are not doing LEDs to stop other research and development, we are also developing halogen lamps to improve product performance. In the next 20 years, LEDs will continue to increase and the production of halogen lamps will remain stable. HID can feel the pressure from the LED.

Liu Zhiqiang: We have seen that the automobile market is growing rapidly. Although the previous two years have been affected by the financial crisis, since 2010, global car sales have far exceeded sales before the financial crisis, mainly due to the growth of countries such as China and India. We believe that from a population perspective, the space is still very large. The demand for LEDs will continue to grow, so we will continue to do research and development and continuously improve our technology.

Han Meng: LEDs can be subdivided into applications in signal lights, such as brake lights and tail lights. LEDs have been used in 30% of mid-range cars, and everyone is more recognized. But at the front end, the usage rate is very low. LED is a system, and many people can't see it. Not only is the light source to be bright, but also a large heat sink is required for heat management, and the driving requirements are also high, such as whether the automotive voltage system is stable. We need to stabilize the current output, and problems can be detected automatically, which will increase the complexity of the system.

As a solid light source, LEDs can meet their performance requirements in the laboratory or at room temperature. However, the actual application conditions will be very demanding. For example, in a headlight, the ambient temperature can reach 105 degrees, causing the LED's light to be significantly attenuated and the lifetime to be affected. So the LED system is actually very complicated to use, it involves all aspects - reliable system, effective heat management, compact optical design and very complicated drive. For traditional enterprises, the initial investment cost will be very high. This sleek, attractive look comes at a very high initial investment.

Since the world's first full-LED headlights were used in Audi in 2008, OEMs and headlight suppliers have invested heavily in this area. It is expected that by 2015, LED will continue to develop rapidly. A typical application is the daytime running lights. Relatively speaking, it is easiest to achieve an attractive appearance with less investment. After it, other lights, like fog lights and corner lights, will also be applied quickly. The last step, which is the most challenging of 28a, is high beam and low beam.

Han Meng: It depends on what kind of application. The car headlights mentioned in the speech. Can not be said to dominate, optimistic estimate to reach 2% by 2015 is already very good, the current application is only about 0.2%. However, the application of LED is very wide. For example, the daytime running lights, corner lights and fog lights mentioned above are made from easy to difficult, and the experience is accumulated while controlling costs. By 2015, all aspects of the application will appear, unlike the current European market is limited to high-end cars. Our characteristics are not the same as those in Europe. We are developing fast in China and have multiple entry points.

Han Meng: This is a constant challenge for users. From the perspective of technology development, it is important to have more patents, research and development, and process leadership. It is also important to listen to customer feedback. The feedback from customers is that heat dissipation is a very big challenge, in order to make it convenient for users.
