Renesas Electronics Introduces Latest E3SE/P Set-Top Box Chips

21ic News Renesas Electronics Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Renesas Electronics") announced the launch of the new system chip EMMTM3SE/P for set-top boxes (STB), which supports video standards for global digital TV broadcasting and broadcasts Internet-based content. The various video formats required. The EMMA3SE/P integrates the functions required to receive digital broadcasts on a single chip, including digital video and audio signal decoding (decompression) and image adjustment.

Renesas Electronics has also developed a set-top box SoC - EMMA3SL2/LP that supports standard definition (SD) broadcasts and will be available for sale simultaneously with the EMMA3SE/P SoC.

Renesas Electronics has been committed to the development of the set-top box SoC chip and the preparation of the solution. With the popularity of digital broadcasting and Internet-based content, the demand for products such as set-top boxes is also increasing. As one of the company's strategic products, Renesas Electronics is actively promoting the business. In 1998, Renesas Electronics was the first to introduce a system processor for STB with digital broadcast reception. By February 2011, the cumulative sales of STB chips reached 100 million.

Digital TV broadcasting applications are rapidly increasing worldwide, and 3D video broadcasting and Internet-based content are expected to become popular. As a result, there is a growing need for semiconductor chips that meet these standards and support the latest video formats. At the same time, the demand for economical products such as set-top boxes and Internet-enabled TVs is expected to increase in fast-growing emerging economies.
EMMA3SE/P is the successor to the EMMA3SL/P HD set-top box chip released in 2009. In addition to the STB for broadcast H.264 HD viewing experience, it is also suitable for the PVR market, such as the H.264 HD DVR product market, including models such as internal hard drives. In addition, the EMMA3SE/P set-top box application software is compatible with the application software on the earlier EMMA3SL/P.

Main features of EMMA3SE/P:
(1) Advanced technology and industry-leading small package
EMMA3SE/P supports digital broadcasting and H.264 HD decoding. It uses a 40nm process and a 16-bit DDR3 memory interface with a pin count less than 1/3 of Renesas Electronics' early EMMA3SL/P. This allows for a package size of only 17mm × 17mm, allowing system manufacturers to design smaller STB products and reduce overall system cost by using smaller printed circuit boards (PCBs). The EMMA3SE/P and EMMA3SL2/LP are pin-to-pin compatible, allowing manufacturers to easily develop HD and SD products on a unified hardware platform.
(2) Support for various video formats In addition to the earlier EMMA3SL/P compatible with MPEG2, MPEG4 AVC, DivXTM, VC-1, WMV and Chinese standard AVS, EMMA3SE/P also supports H.264 MVC for 3D TV broadcasting. Technology and IP-oriented and Internet-based content formats (such as VP6 and Sorenson Spark).
(3) Enhanced security features to prevent unauthorized reception Because copyright protection is important, EMMA3SE/P SoC supports the latest technical specifications of major CA vendors worldwide to prevent signal theft. Paid broadcast content distributors can use EMMA3SE/P to develop STBs that support advanced security.

Renesas Electronics is promoting EMMA3SE/P in China. In China, satellite HD TV broadcasting is expected to begin in fiscal 2011. Renesas Electronics will launch EMMA3SL2/LP sales promotion activities in emerging digital broadcasting markets such as India, Africa and Russia, and H.264 SD is expected to become the main broadcasting standard.

Renesas Electronics will continue to increase the R-Home S Series STB SoC to further strengthen and expand the range of home multimedia products.
