Broadband tunable multi-wavelength femtosecond lasers have been one of the most popular topics in ultrafast laser technology research due to their wide application in time-resolved spectroscopy, bio-imaging, laser radar, and atmospheric environmental monitoring. However, limited by the current laser gain medium and its emission spectrum, the wavelength of the laser output by the mode-locked laser oscillator is generally limited to a specific range, and the tuning range is limited. The optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with mode-locked laser synchronous pumping is an important means of obtaining wavelength tunable ultrashort pulses, but its output power is lower than that of a mode-locked laser oscillator. Since the L07 group of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences/Beijing National Center for Condensed Matter Physics has successfully developed the first femtosecond OPO in China, it has been working on OPO wavelength expansion and power improvement. It has used 800nm, 1030nm and 515nm wavelength lasers. Pump light, using KTP, BBO, LBO, BiBO and other nonlinear crystals as the parametric gain medium, realized a series of femtosecond OPO operations, especially in cooperation with Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology, using the new nonlinear crystal BiBO to obtain signal light wavelength coverage. The 688-1057 nm range and the idler light wavelength cover the output in the range of 1150-1900 nm, and the highest average power is 1.09 W (see the 38th scientific research progress in 2016).
Recently, the research team's Ph.D. student Meng Xiangyu and others under the guidance of the instructors Wei Zhiyi, Wang Zhaohua, Fang Shaobo, using nonlinear crystal KTA as a parameter gain medium, based on the cooperation with Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology, further obtained the wavelength. From the visible light tunable to the 3.84 μm mid-infrared femtosecond laser pulse output (Figure 1), the maximum output power is increased to 2.3 W, and the shortest pulse width is 129 fs, which exceeds the average power output of the conventional femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser oscillator. The relevant research results are published in the latest Optical Express (Optics Letters. Vol 43(4) 943-946, 2018). At the same time, they used the femtosecond OPO laser as the light source, and cooperated with the Suzhou Medical Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to carry out two-photon microscopy imaging, scanning confocal microscopy and two-photon STED application experiments (Fig. 2), and obtained clear biology. Microscopic imaging (Figure 3).
