Warner Bros.’s latest patent showcases a new VR/AR film delivery system that opens up three viewing platforms for cinemas, home theaters, and head-mounted displays, designed to bring VR/AR/MR movie experiences to movie audiences.
The foreign site patentlyapple discovered the patent on April 13th and posted it on the Internet. According to Pattylyapple, the system can be used with headphone (such as Microsoft Hololens) and can be used in cinemas and homes. This has also led to some interesting questions, such as who will buy equipment and who would like to go to the cinema if the technology is implemented?
As can be seen from the patent application, this system will be applied to augmented reality and virtual reality. The potential seems to be large, and users may be able to see images that extend from the physical screen so that they have more choices to choose from before their eyes.
For example, patents provide the viewer with the possibility to experience the same movie from different perspectives.
In one case, everyone in the audience will see the same picture as if they were all sitting in the same place. In the other case, the head display may consider the position of the audience, and depending on the location of each audience, they may see different screens from the audience sitting elsewhere.
At present, this is only a patent, but how this technology can be implemented may be quite different from the patent map we see now. However, mixed reality seems to be growing in excitement in the movie industry. Since the last century, there has been no medium that can change the current movie delivery system, and VR/AR has a great potential to change.
