The discussion about QLED and OLED (hereafter referred to as Q and O) has long been a long-awaited. Both of them compete on the same stage, so they can't avoid the difference. The noise of marketing purposes also intentionally or unintentionally confuse the truth behind the portrait.
The 2017 International Quantum Dot Display Industry Forum, held in Beijing on April 13th, brought both of the noisy and the noisy into calm and rationality. Coincidentally, just the day before, an OLED TV manufacturer just released an amazing CMOS wallpaper TV with 3.6mm thickness.
Taking advantage of the trend and "potentially man-made"
There seems to be some subtle changes in the pattern of Q and O. Consumer demand is changing, and industry trends are changing. Before five years, the two may not be much comparable. One is easy to get used to, one is high-energy and low-yield; five years later, On the trajectory of compromise and growth, the situation is completely different. Therefore, it is necessary to "review the old things" today.
If the success of a product is defined as obtaining a large number of markets, then in addition to discussing the technology itself, we must understand the market demand for technology and the industry alliance that uses technology. Because in addition to taking advantage of the trend, it can also be "potentially artificial."
In September 2015, LGD and the upstream and downstream industry chain and research institutes of the color TV set up the “China OLED Display Industry Allianceâ€, including traditional color TV manufacturers such as LG, Skyworth, Konka and Changhong. In 2017, Sony and Panasonic also released OLED TV products. In the smart phone industry, Samsung AMOLED has been in mass production for 10 years. In recent years, with the call of OLED for Apple mobile phones, many domestic panel manufacturers have also stepped into the OLED field. OLEDs in the field of VR and wearable devices have always been the first choice.
QLED has undertaken almost all the supporting facilities of the LCD era, and also accepted its "good quality and low price" characteristics. It has become the most successful improvement of LCD. The biggest Samsung seems to be rooted in the QLED industry on the big screen without hesitation. The color TV manufacturers of the Quantum Dot Industry Alliance include Samsung, TCL, Hisense, and each traditional TV manufacturer will be more or less involved. Quantum dot industry, including Sony, Panasonic and so on. And Samsung also took the lead in introducing QLED technology into the field of PC displays.
From the "trend" point of view, OLED seems to be very strong; but from the overall market share of supply and demand, QLED still occupies more than half of the river.
The reason is also very simple, the business strategy of the industry giants often become the wind of the entire industry. That's right, it's Samsung's QLED strategy. This global leader in color TV sales for 11 consecutive years, although not the absolute leader of the technology trend, but in every technology wave, Samsung's shadow is absolutely indispensable.
The wave of technological change this time is the competition and compromise between Q and O.
What kind of experience is called the ultimate visual experience?
Do not inherently think that OLEDs must be advanced technology than QLED because they change the mode of illumination. In fact, both QLED and OLED represent the future direction of display technology, but at the same time they are faced with the pressure and constraints of technology and cost games. Under the fierce competition in the market, all seemingly beautiful things may be the product of compromise when presented to you. You should have a deep understanding, technology has been improving, but the quality of the product does not always have to grow, because the cost advantage affects the survival of the product.
Therefore, for two technologies that are not completely outbreaked, it is necessary to understand what their current form and final form are.
The final form of the QLED should be the active illumination of the quantum dot material, which does not require a backlight on the display device. The current form is to distribute the quantum dot film in front of the blue LED to form a higher purity backlight, which leads to more "pure" color performance through the liquid crystal molecules.
The final form of the OLED should be the active luminescence of the OLED organic material, producing RGB three primary colors to form the color. The current form is the use of white OLED technology, OLED only acts as a self-illuminating backlight, and also needs to filter this process.
From a structural point of view, you will find that these two technologies that seem to be not in the same dimension are so similar, both in the current form and in the future form. It's just different on the luminescent material.
Quantum dots have an interesting property. By changing the size of a quantum dot, it can affect the wave difference of its luminescence, thus affecting the color of its emission. When the size is small, the light is blue, and the size becomes green, yellowish green, then orange, and finally red. This interesting feature makes quantum dots an endorsement of high color gamut. The same material can meet the needs of different color gamuts.
The existing color TV display technology relies on the combination of three primary colors of red, green and blue to form color. The spectrum of the quantum dot film backlight and OLED technology in red, green and blue is as shown in the following figure. We can see the Q and O of the blue spectrum. Very clear and clear, but between green and red, OLED is not as pure as quantum dots. Therefore, in order to obtain a more pure three primary colors, the OLED will use a stronger filter layer. In turn, this method will reduce its energy efficiency, and the color gamut and brightness cannot be fully applied.
What kind of experience is called the ultimate visual experience? What effect do we most want to get when watching TV movies? In fact, it is just a reproduction of the visual enjoyment we have experienced in nature. The human eye is very powerful, and you can see rich color information and brightness information during the day. After the pupil is enlarged at night, it is very sensitive to the capture of light. To simulate the world observed by the human eye with a display device, there must be three key elements: clarity, high dynamic range (HDR), and color.
The previous evaluation or introduction will always separate these three elements. But recently there has been a very popular concept in the academic and industrial worlds of "color rendering volume", which breaks our inherent thinking about the display effect - if you leave the brightness to talk about color, it will become a false proposition.
For example, watching a picture of a volcanic eruption, or watching a video of a volcanic eruption on a general display device, is no way to experience the magnificence of visiting the scene. The reason is that although the photo has the exact color of the volcanic eruption, but this color is not displayed at the right brightness, there is no way to give you a real feeling.
Who is better for the color rendering volume Q and O? There are two main types of OLED TVs, one is called RGB OLED, and the other is called white OLED. RGB OLEDs have no way to make large sizes because of mass production. White OLEDs are the technology used in OLED TVs that you can see on the market. However, active luminescence is faced with a material depletion phenomenon. If the high brightness is maintained for a long time, the loss of organic materials is very large, and the OLED energy efficiency is reduced as mentioned above, so the brightness of OLED TVs is generally not too high. High, about 500-600nit.
QLED TVs use a traditional backlight mode, which increases the power consumption of LEDs and uses bolder backlight technology to make TVs brighter. The peak brightness of Sony's Z9D and Samsung QLED TV can reach 1500 nit or more.
The contest of high brightness comes to an end, what about the dark field details? It can be said that OLED has an innate advantage for dark field control because it can achieve absolute black, infinite contrast. But the actual situation is not that simple.
In fact, the true and effective contrast is determined not only by one pixel, but also by how much light is reflected by this pixel. Unless you are locked in the black room to watch TV, there will be interference from reflected light. So it is difficult to achieve zero brightness in the absolute sense. Therefore, when the overall brightness of the QLED is higher than that of the OLED, the lower the brightness of the TV playback screen, the more advantageous the OLED is, but the brightness of the picture is continuously enhanced, and the effective contrast advantage of the QLED becomes more and more obvious.
Another point is that OLEDs still have some limitations in terms of weak current control. Dark details and color transition problems are a big problem for both RGB OLED and white OLED. The adjustment of OLED brightness is controlled by PWM or DC dimming mode. When the color depth reaches 8bit and 256 levels, the control difficulty is very large. 10bit, 1024, if you can't do it well, the details of the dark part may be dead.
By the way, I also mentioned the problem of OLED burn-in in the rumor. Since 2016, LGD has been superimposed with white light by three-color OLEDs instead of the old blue-and-yellow OLEDs, and the OLED materials use the most advanced materials of Sumitomo Chemical. The problem of burn-in is no longer a problem. So Sony and Panasonic have boldly adopted LGD's OLED screen this year.
After a long round of PK, QLED and OLED are not completely determined, but have different styles. In the process of restoring the real world, everyone has different ways of realizing it, but no one is omnipotent, and there is always a certain complementary relationship. Just like online and offline in business, 3D and VR in film and television, Chinese medicine in medicine and Western medicine are all coexisting relationships.
Some talk outside the picture quality
Is the condition for consumers to buy TV just for quality? Q and O can't just take the picture quality to make a simple and rude comparison. Design or "shell change" has become an insurmountable innovative means of product fast food culture.
After dressing and warming, who wouldn't want better clothes? After watching TV quality is enough, who does not want a more beautiful product form? Just like Xiaomi MIX and Samsung S8, you will feel that the iPhone is ugly, but the iPhone is still the best smartphone for interactive experience, but what about?
What OLEDs most admire should be the unique form of the product. The structural simplicity advantage has been derived from the industrial design of the product. It is believed that the most beautiful products are exuded from the bones and do not require any additional packaging. The elegance of OLED in the technical structure is indeed refreshing.
For example, OLED can be made into Wallpaper, which can be made into a screen sound, and can be made into flexible bending. These are the new demands that the color TV consumer market is constantly cultivating, because human nature is constantly pursuing beauty. The most primitive violent appeals of modern people are placed on a variety of art. The simple structure of OLED can also be regarded as one of the arts.
QLED can also pursue ultra-thin, but it must be greatly reduced in the backlight module. So from a structural point of view, I have to admire OLED.
There is one more point that must be mentioned, the price, the comparison of everything from the price is a drag. LG's OLED saw Samsung's QLED crying. I didn't expect the same size to be almost half cheaper than me. In the blink of an eye, I saw Sony's 100-inch Z9D and laughed. I didn't expect this guy to buy 500,000. I also laughed at LG's OLED. This guy is only 77.
to sum up
In the end, QLEDs and OLEDs don't seem to be as comparable as the media. QLED is more like an honest traveler, has accumulated hundreds of millions of steps, and has a vast experience in him. OLED is more like a model walking in the major shows, wearing thousands of sets of fashion, she has a unique insight into fashion and beauty.
It doesn't have to be a winner or a loser, even if it is, it is not determined by the technology itself, because the technology is efficient and
