65” LG OLED TV evaluation OLED panel picture quality is excellent and clear!

Almost all LCD TVs currently on the market illuminate panels with a single backlight. Each pixel on the OLED panel emits light on its own.

Over the years, the entire TV market has been dominated by LCD panels, including different core technology types such as IPS, VA and TN. However, in view of the current TV market, most IPS panel products are sold at a reduced price, and TN panels Most of them are used on low-end models. As for VA, it has already begun to be slowly eliminated. Although IPS has a large market share in the field of computer monitors and is known for providing a wide range of viewing angles, it still has not received the desired results in the television field.

The traditional LCD display provides light through the illuminated backplane, and almost all LCD TVs on the market today illuminate the panel with a single backlight. The OLED is a completely different display mode. Each pixel on the OLED panel emits light on its own. In addition, the OLED pixel itself is black, so the OLED panel has an unbeatable effect when it is actually a dark screen.

Although some LCD panels have local dimming technology that can turn off backlighting in certain areas, there is still no OLED that looks natural.

This time, we have brought LG's 65-inch 65EG960V ultra-high-definition 4K OLED TV. The price of this product has now been reduced to 5,400 US dollars (about 34,530 yuan), and the price is higher than when it was just listed. A lot cheaper. Although Panasonic has another 65-inch OLED TV, it is also more expensive.

First impression

The 65EG960V's box is big and thin, and I have to stuff it under the bed to get it.

The assembly process of the 65EG960V is very simple, as long as the base is fixed to the body with screws. Although the mounting bracket area is plastic, the height can be adjusted with a nylon buckle.

The weight of the 65EG960V is 5.1 kg, but it seems to be top-heavy, but it's very stable on the table and you don't have to worry about it. Unfortunately, the base of the 65EG960V is only height-adjustable and does not have the ability to adjust the angle.

The 65EG960V's back panel is based on the Korean custom white, and uses a dark diamond design, but does not use traditional glass, matte metal or other plastic, feel good, looks very small and fresh. And I was surprised to find that the 65EG960V was really thin, even as thin as my Xperia Z3 smartphone (7.3mm).

Settings and user interface

As a high-end model of LG, the remote control of the 65EG960V looks cool and looks like the controller of the Nintendo Wii.

The 65EG960V remote controller uses a wireless network connection and displays a mouse on the screen compared to a normal infrared remote control. Another feature of this remote control is that the integrated microphone can be used for voice control. I find it very convenient sometimes during use, especially when entering text on the screen.

The remote's power supply is on top and can be illuminated when activated, and the voice control engine is provided by Google. By default, the 65EG960V can use voice commands to control the system, which is implemented through the Web browser's built-in Google home page. When you press the microphone button, you can also slide right.

There are about two groups of interfaces on the back of the 65EG960V. One side is the USB and HDMI interfaces, and the other is based on various audio and video interfaces.

At the bottom of the 65EG960V there is a very covert operation button. The bottom edge of the screen is the LG Logo. After pressing, you can use the navigation buttons to control the on-screen menu.

The power cord of the 65EG960V is not long, but it is sufficient for use, so no extended modification is required.

But when I'm arranging the layout of the cable, I must master the direction, otherwise it will make the USB and HDMI interface bent forever like me. If the quality of the cable is not good, a long time may lead to a breakage.

Overall, the user interface of the 65EG960V is very user-friendly and easy to use. All animation effects are very smooth, as if it were a top-level smartphone or tablet. The only thing I was unsatisfied with was when using the remote control, the cursor would not appear on the screen immediately and it would take a few seconds. After the cursor naturally appears, the pink cursor is still very cute.

When you want to use the remote control, you must first press a button to let the cursor appear, otherwise it can only be used in normal remote control mode.

After activating the cursor, there will be a small delay on the screen, which obviously lags behind the remote control mode.

content

There are many ways to access the content on the 65EG960V, one of which is from the Device Connector on the main interface. This feature provides all video source options available for the TV.

Color and accuracy

After powering on, the 65EG960V is very rich in color and vibrant. The default resolution is also sufficient to support live video and set-top box signals. However, if you want to connect a local file or PC file, it is best to adjust the default sharpness from 25 to 21. .

Later I also adjusted some other default settings, including dynamic backlight/contrast settings, and MPEG noise reduction, etc., and different adjustments were made depending on the content.

At the same time, the 65EG960V also has a black level option. If it is set to "high" it will make the screen look like a pure black panel, and the black detail of the shadow in the movie will be more prominent. If you set back to "low", it shows the level of OLED.

After some settings, if the scene is turned from dark to bright, the OLED panel will not have the problem of too large gamut difference.

I downloaded the AVS HD 709 HDTV HD kit calibration and performed some benchmark calibrations. One thing to note when calibrating the 65EG960V is that although there are some color setting options, there is no separate RGB adjustment option.

After connecting the HTPC through HDMI, the measured value of the color is i1Profiler, and the color value is 6095K. If the adjustment is started from 6500K, the color gamut will not change much. If on a RGB-controlled TV, I can adjust this value to be very close to 6500K.

Under my multiple adjustments, I summarized the best picture parameters of the 65EG960V as follows:

Picture mode: standard (user);
OLED brightness: 50;
Contrast: 95;
Brightness: 54;
Sharpness: 21;
Color: 55 or 52 (based on your preference);

sound

Turning on "super surround" stereo can make the built-in speaker's bass deeper, and in the default setting, this feature is turned off. And other audio settings I think the default is good, without much change.

Performance (dynamic picture)

During the test, I played as much dynamic content as possible on the 65EG960V, including the downloaded 4K Blu-ray demo video, MKV/AVI files saved to the mobile hard disk, and Freeview HD, YouTube, Web browser, and various set-top boxes.

In the IMAX scene it looks very grand and not too much awkward. But it is worth mentioning that in the conversion of dark scenes, there will be some residual image on the left and right panels, but this seems to be a very common problem on the OLED panel. However, it is not obvious. If you do not pay attention, you will not see it.

In the player's UI design, some interesting buttons have been added, including playback, awakening the cursor, and so on.

65EG960V also supports 720P and 1080P resolution video, and the picture looks very delicate. When watching TV on the sofa, the curved screen brings a sense of immersion.

In a dark scene, the OLED effect on the black screen looks really great. Although the test movie was 21:9 widescreen, it still showed a huge advantage of OLED.

In this area, OLED is absolutely the king.

The ghosting problem of the 65EG960V is seldom, and only subtle phenomena occur in very fast moving scenes. Compared with other OLED TVs, there are similar problems.

image

I put some of my photos on a USB flash drive and see how they perform on the 65EG960V. Due to the nature of the OLED, the saturation of the photo is high and the overall result is satisfactory.

In terms of saturation, especially blue, I think it has already appeared in place.

I compared the TN panel TV with the 65EG960V and found that the 65EG960V had almost no delay in photo switching and became a qualified flagship TV.

app Store

LG's app store is called Content Store, where we can get movies, games, apps, and other premium content. What I am most interested in is which applications can be found in the app store, but then I find that the number of applications is lacking and has not attracted much interest from me.

In this regard, compared with Android and iOS, it is indeed a bit disappointing, but any product has imperfections, as does the 65EG960V.

4K video

When displaying local 4K video, 65EG960V really showed its strength. No matter how close we are, we can see some of the effects are perfect, especially the bird's-eye view of the city. The clear effect can be described as amazing.

to sum up

Compared with other competitors, the price of 65EG960V is almost twice as expensive, so our demand for 65EG960V is naturally higher. As a game fan, there is no chance to test the game effect of 65EG960V, but it is a little regrettable.

During the test, what impressed me most was the picture quality of the 65EG960V, especially the black level. It can almost give a full score, but the number of application stores and cursor scene delays are also some small flaws. The surface of the 65EG960V screen is not so obvious. I personally feel that it works well in the IMAX mode. From a certain angle, the capacity of the scene can be increased and the momentum of the movie can be even more impressive.

Although the 65EG960V is not a perfect TV, although there is a cheaper version, but if you are willing to spend more money, 65EG960V can naturally provide a more perfect experience.

65EG960V is a great TV in general, the price is not too exaggerated, although there is no room for downward price adjustment, but at present from the OLED market, LG is a worthy leader.
