Secretary General of Telematics Industry Application Alliance (TIAA) Pang Chunlin (left)

The Automotive Information Industry Applications Alliance (TIAA) was established in 2010 by the China Electronics Industry Standardization Technical Association under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Health, and the National Standardization Management Committee.

TIAA's work has three main lines: First, the establishment of standards; Second, capital cooperation, and promote the joint venture of some units; Third, patents, establish their own patent pool, the core patent binding. The cooperation between TIAA and the industry aims to form a relationship of upstream and downstream cooperation in the industry chain by targeting hotspots and combining members of the alliance to jointly develop technology products and service models in this field.

From August 12th to August 13th, Lei Fengwang held the CCF-GAIR Global Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Summit in Shenzhen. Many top representatives from academia and industry shared their latest developments in their respective fields in Shenzhen. . Pang Chunlin was invited to attend this summit. This article is an exclusive interview with him by Lei Fengnet. His main content is his understanding and opinions on smart cars and car networking.

What kind of company is competitive in the automotive field?

Lei Feng Network: Since the establishment of TIAA in 2010, after six years of development, you have witnessed changes in the field of vehicle information services and car networking. As a witness, what changes do you feel in this field and grow?

Pang Chunlin: The biggest change now is the attitude of the government towards new technology companies and business models. For example, the network about the car, the government has fully released.

The second is to absorb more industries to pay attention to this area, such as the Internet building or other industries cross-border, of course, there are some gimmicks. To talk about IT disruption is not subversion, but integration. We have always talked about industrialization, information integration, and Internet+. In fact, it is the integration of electronic information and various industries, so it has also brought many industries to the transition to this field.

The third change is that six years ago we proposed the establishment of smart car standards, automotive software, technology systems and other relatively advanced technical standards. At that time there were more skeptical attitudes and I felt that it was not so fast. But now the market situation is hot.

In terms of technical reserves, many technologies may be a weakness six years ago and are still there. On the surface, it seems that many people are involved. Actually, there are still technical gaps. For example, smart cars and embedded software systems are still not being implemented by several organizations. Information security is also a short board.

Lei Fengwang: The technical reserves or technological patterns are not much changed or even weaker six years ago. Do you think there is insufficient input, technical capacity or other reasons?

Pang Chunlin: The growth of any industry requires a certain environmental base and growth time. For example, smart cars can't be separated from several major technological foundations: integrated circuits, software, and communications. Now integrated circuits and software have always been our shortcomings. General technology did not get up, smart cars are blank and weak in these two areas.

Nowadays, the communication technology for car networking, such as 5G, has not yet begun to spread. Currently we have shortcomings in chips, software, and high-end technology devices. Why do we say that the technological structure has not changed much, because the progress of China’s current breakthrough in these three areas is not particularly large.

These shortcomings also have great challenges for us. There are few and technical barriers are higher than consumer electronics. If we can not say that consumer electronics breakthrough, then we will face more challenges in automotive electronics, smart cars. So now we're seeing more of a fuss about autopilot or the ADAS algorithm.

Lei Feng network: how to change this pattern?

Pang Chunlin: This is more complicated and related to the entire industrial environment and investment. Money is a crucial element, but it does not mean that if you invest money, you will certainly be able to produce something. Also related to policy, environment, etc.

China is the country with the highest investment in scientific research in the world. It is estimated at several trillion yuan a year. However, there is still a gap between the quality of our scientific and technological achievements and that of the United States. Therefore, money only makes up for the shortcomings of scientific research. However, it may still lack talents or other aspects.

Lei Feng network: Do you think what kind of company is more core and competitive in this field?

Pang Chunlin: The OEM with its innovative and new concept will continue to be the basis of this industry chain. The model of possible vehicles will change. Many auto manufacturers are now designing their own production and it is very likely that they will only accept orders in the future. Become a foundry.

Component manufacturers and electronic information integration, new modular enterprises will be long-term development. The so-called modular production companies, such as the original anti-lock system is purely mechanical, now plus ECU, electronic control and some algorithms. In other words, companies that have become affiliated from now on and become intelligent may become the main force in the future.

Industrial software and embedded software, doing algorithmic business. In the future, many companies will need embedded systems. Algorithms are like human thinking. Each system and component will become intelligent. This aspect of software will also be reflected in the car, but it will be tied to the hardware. Form a complete system. In fact, this is closely related to the second point.

New information providers related to car networking and intelligent information services will grow . For example, Alibaba (in cooperation with SAIC) is actually trying to obtain more information. It is actually providing a more innovative information service. The current information may be obtained from the portal site or mobile phone. In the future, there may be more obvious features of the vehicle. New car service operators may get up.

In the automotive aftermarket, including repairs and maintenance, a number of new companies may emerge, subverting the original methods, and some business models or technological models will emerge.

The Future of China's Internet of Vehicles

Lei Fengwang: At this stage, the development of China's car network compared with foreign countries is in what position?

Pang Chunlin: China still has its own characteristics in terms of technical reserves and scientific research. Because we have started to do research in this area since the 1980s. Like unmanned we have done for thirty years and have their own characteristics. But overall, China and Europe and the United States, is the hardware gap is relatively large, the software is very hot.

There are many tricks in China in terms of services. For example, parking, car washing, and car buying services are more popular than in foreign countries. This is a feature of China. China’s online retail transaction volume is also the largest in the world. Europe and the United States are basically still traditional, but not many people can make a profit because the profit model is not obvious and they are all burning money.

On the hardware side, we have a gap with Europe and the United States. For example, if the three core components, high-end chips, and basic software are said to be “hard”, then we have shortcomings in the hardware itself, which is a big gap between Europe and the United States. For example, vision, the whole world is Mobileye.

Lei Feng Network (search "Lei Feng Net" public concern) : In what direction will the future of China's car network develop? What do you think its future direction is like?

Pang Chunlin: I think the future development may lead to a breakthrough in autonomous driving or new services. For example, the network about the car, the world's first we recognize the network about the car.

From another perspective, the government is very supportive. So I think China may be ahead of Europe and the United States in terms of application environment and applications. The government will create a good environment. We support Baidu’s unmanned pilot community in Wuhu and Wuzhen, and BAIC is in the area of Panjin. Therefore, the government’s support and policy in this area may be even more advanced.

We may be faster in the application of in-vehicle information services. In some segments, I think China may stand out. Because the important part of self-driving cars involves information security, in the future, navigation, maps, and information modules will be used exclusively by Chinese companies, so why do we support Baidu, Gaode, NavInfo, and Beidou, because It is impossible to open up to foreign capital to do it.

Smart driving and car networking

Lei Fengwang: In the past year, everyone is talking about smart driving. What do you think about the changes that unmanned or autonomous driving will bring to human life in the future?

Pang Chunlin: After the popularity of automatic driving, it will bring great impact: change the social ecological chain and labor system structure. In fact, it is the machine that replaces people. This may bring a bigger impact, but why do autopilots do it? This is because automatic driving can change the "disordered" state of ground traffic to "ordered." For example, high-speed trains, planes and even ships are also called orderly driving in a certain sense.

The only one of the world’s most irregular modes of transportation is ground-level land transport, which causes many accidents and energy losses every year. Automatic driving can bring: safety, energy, environmental protection and efficiency. This is a change brought about by autopilot. Its contribution to the future of human life is enormous. This is the benefit it brings.

Of course, the employment problems it brings will be solved through other channels. This is also the historical law of human development: Many farmers in the industrial revolution are unemployed, but society still develops and creates wealth. Any technology that creates wealth is, in a simple sense, a good thing in itself.

Lei Feng Network: From the ordinary car to the smart car in the process of transformation, do you think this is the most critical thing?

Pang Chunlin: The first is the reliability of the technology, enough to prove that the driving of the machine is more reliable than the human driving. The second is the cost. The cost is cheap enough and the application will get bigger and bigger. The CEO of Google Unmanned Vehicle talked to us. He thinks this is in accordance with Moore's Law: That is, efficiency doubles every two years, and prices drop by half.

The reliability is solved and the cost is reduced, which is getting closer and closer to the universal. In certain areas, such as trucks and other commercial vehicles will be applied faster.

Lei Fengwang: How do you see the relationship between smart cars and car networking?

Pang Chunlin: We once proposed that smart cars and smart roads are all fulcrums. The fulcrum is to generate information, create information, and transmit information. Only the fulcrum, car networking makes sense.

Car networking is actually relying on communication technology, connecting these fulcrums together, so they are point-to-line relationships, and several points and lines are connected together to form a surface - this is an on-board information service.

Lei Fengnet: In 2014, you gave a speech and said that in the future, smart cars will move toward quadruple: sensor intelligence, software integration, transmission speed, and environment interaction. Now that two years have passed, what degree do you think this trend has developed?

Pang Chunlin: It is still going to this stage. Environmental interaction has not yet begun because it must have reliable communications and 5G has not yet been applied, so the environment has not yet been universalized, including smart roads.

Software integration now includes more directions, and now more and more automotive software is beginning to form modular software. The original view was that there are now about 7,000 chips in the car; another point is the generalization of the chip operating system, may not need so many chips in the future, a chip can manage a lot of ECUs, called system-level chips.

From the current point of view, the cooperation between SAIC and Ali is a case in point. In the vehicle terminal, its computing power and its implemented functions are actually more powerful than the traditional vehicle computing functions.

Lei Feng network: In the wave of smart cars, do you think the future is dominated by car manufacturers or technology-based technology companies?

Pang Chunlin: In the future, car manufacturers will become the carrier of OEM. New technology companies will continue to play the leading role.

In the future, there will be a new trend in automakers' future: called personalization. I think the depot right of the car factory may not be as high as it is now. More than 100 automakers now have their own excess capacity. In the future, many depots will become OEM partners.

The personalized car era will not be like mass production now. Personalized car sets have also become popular in Europe and the United States. Industry 4.0 is so defined that the factory is only a part of the process. The future profit must not be produced. It is only now that the entire vehicle plant integrates design, production and sales into a single entity. The space for profit management is the largest, and sales and design will be separated in the future. For example, after the online sales, the design can be outsourced. These two changes may bring some changes to the automaker.
