Conexant Systems, Inc., the world's leading provider of broadband communications, enterprise networks and digital home semiconductor solutions, today announced a new line of digital video broadcasting (DVB) decoders. This series is for the large-scale free receiving market (FTA) satellite set-top box (STB) products. The first devices are the CX24301, which provides basic STB functionality, and the high-performance CX24302 for cost-sensitive and more advanced STB applications. Both devices are available for the company's satellite tuner for front-end and back-end system solutions. The new System-on-Chip (SoC) decoder was developed by Conexant Shanghai Design Center, which focuses on developing STB chips for global applications.

The CX24301 and CX24302 include a high-speed integrated data port and flexible connectivity to a variety of different broadband front ends, making the decoder a universal back-end platform for terrestrial and cable platforms. This flexibility saves them money because manufacturers can use a single device on multiple products.

The new decoder based on the powerful 32-bit 150Mhz ARM946 central processing unit (CPU) includes an MPEG decoder and integrated QPSK demodulator with automatic rate detection (blind scanning), which reduces bill of materials (BOM) costs. . Other common features include 2D graphics accelerators, TV encoders, decoders, and video/graphic display synthesis controllers.

The high-performance CX24302 has six video digital-to-analog converters (DACs), a complete smart card interface, and a universal interface for DVB (DVB-CI). The full-featured decoder also provides expansion capabilities through an integrated USB 2.0 interface.

Conexant offers complete digital STB components and system solutions for satellite, terrestrial and cable entertainment broadcast networks worldwide. The company's products also include silicon tuners, satellite demodulators, MPEG audio and video decoders, and dial-up modems for back-end channels. The supplied reference design helps manufacturers save money and speed time to market, including operating systems, middleware, drives, and development tools.

Samples of the CX24301 and CX24302 are available now and are expected to be in volume production in October. The CX24301 is available in a 208-pin square flat package (QFP). It is sold in 10,000 units and retails for $5.00 each. The CX24302 is available in a 256-pin ball grid array package (BGA). It is sold in 10,000 units and retails for $6.00 each.
