ON Semiconductor introduces the NCP2820 cost-effective, filterless Class D audio amplifier designed for portable applications, including cell phones, digital cameras, portable media players, notebook computers, LCD monitors and other handheld devices. Further expand the company's audio amplifier product line. The NCP2820 enhances maximum audio amplification with minimal board area and extends battery life with high energy efficiency and low shutdown current.
The NCP2820 provides a continuous average power of 2.65 watts (W) for a 4 ohm bridge connected load (BTL) from a 5 volt (V) supply. Under the same conditions, the output power segment can provide 1.4 W for an 8 ohm bridge-connected load, while total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) is less than 1%. The NCP2820 is available in a small 1.45 mm x 1.45mm, flip-chip package (CSP) with an input voltage range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V. It drives clean audio output and is the most powerful audio amplifier on the market. The device eliminates the need for an output filter when using an inductive sensor, saving space and cost. This audio amplifier is up to 90% efficient and has a very low shutdown current, typically only 0.42 microamps (μA), which reduces battery leakage and greatly reduces junction temperature, reducing power consumption in small portable devices.
The NCP2820 uses pulse width modulation (PWM) to process the analog input while keeping the output noise and THD low. The "Beep and Beep" elimination circuit ensures that no audible noise is produced when starting or shutting down. Therefore, the device can be in shutdown mode for long periods of idle time to reduce power consumption. The device's low 42 microvolt (μV) noise floor, regardless of load sensitivity, uses an A-weighted filter to ensure a cleaned audio output.
