NAC solutions span wired and wireless networks

County Kerry is located in southwestern Ireland. The county council ’s network can serve 800 users through 60 sites, but the council has no way of knowing who or what is connected to the network at any given time. Therefore, when a laptop computer carried a virus and paralyzed the network, the council was forced to immediately look for a network access control (NAC) solution that could cover geographically dispersed, wired and wireless networks.

Padraig Daughton, a network analysis expert at the County of Kerry, said: "The number of sites and the geographical location of the decentralization are the big problems we face. We have considered the port security method, but it is difficult to achieve. We also consider that it may be possible to set up a DHCP The central server serves all sites and bundles MAC addresses, but this method is also difficult to implement. It causes more problems than it can solve. The only solution is network access control. "

Since most of the network was built by Cisco, Kerry County Council first considered Cisco's solution, but the results proved to be costly. The council then evaluated five suppliers and finally chose Bradford Networks and its partner Khipu.

Bradford's Adaptive Network Security (AdapTIve Network Security) architecture and his Network Sentry network access control solution promise to provide network resources safely based on preset policies.

Daughton said: "Bradford's solution is the cheapest, it is very suitable for our network. We do not need to upgrade any Cisco equipment components. Some solutions need to add four or five devices to the network, but Bradford's solution By simply placing its components in the middle of the network, it can cope with wired, wireless and VPN users at the same time. "

Analysis of the network structure of County Kerry

Given the complexity of the Kerry County network, analyzing its structure is no small feat. The backbone of the Parliamentary Wide Area Network (WAN) is a high-capacity licensed wireless network that uses Cisco's enhanced internal gateway routing protocol. Daughton pointed out: "Two 200Mb wireless links from the HQ site to the main site, 80Mb licensed wireless links as backbone network from them extended to the county, where the last hop to some sites use 10 or 15M wireless links." In order to obtain For extra bandwidth, the Council has also taken advantage of the CAMP Fire Internet connection. The other part of the WAN is the MPLS network, which uses a hybrid wireless and DSL operator to provide flexibility and failover capabilities to the wireless network.
