Recently, Sharp has introduced eight new surface-mount (SMD) LEDs with high color rendering, which are expanding their LED portfolio in the PLCC2 package. These products have a color rendering index of up to 80 by using LED bare chips and a color mixture of a special green and red phosphor. The new GM5SAExxP0A series of LEDs, also known as the E-series, ensure that their colors are truly natural. This is very important and cannot be achieved by artificial light. Typical applications for high color rendering (HCR) LEDs include photographic lights, shop window display lighting, and storefront decorative lighting, as well as product displays, as well as medical lighting, such as surgical lights.
The E-Series covers a wide range of color temperatures, from 2700K warm white LEDs to 6500K cool white LEDs. The E-Series's efficacy can be as high as 90lm/W (depending on the module); in terms of luminous efficiency, color temperature and color rendering index (CRI), this new HCRLED has the same characteristics as a traditional fluorescent lamp. At the same time, the E-Series also meets the product requirements of the ENERGY STAR program. In view of this, the GM5SAExxP0A series of LEDs are suitable for a new generation of LED lighting applications, and can also be used in places where fluorescent lamps are commonly used. The E-Series LEDs are also equipped with Zener diodes that can be directly integrated during packaging. They protect the LEDs from electrostatic charges that can occur when voltage spikes occur. This will allow manufacturers to develop products without the need to integrate ESD components on external circuitry. In addition, the E-Series features a very compact construction and is available in an ultra-thin enclosure. The package size is 3.2 x 2.8 x 1.9 mm (PLCC2), making this series of LEDs suitable for applications requiring high brightness and compact form factor.
Thanks to its wide color temperature, compact package and high color rendering, lighting designers have more freedom and flexibility in designing this new HCRLED range.
