Tencent Digital (Compile: Human) currently uses almost all OLED (or AMOLED) displays on high-end smartphones, but it seems that there is not much used in the notebook industry. In June of this year, Dell released an Alienware 13 gamepad with an OLED screen. At the same time, Lenovo also introduced the ThinkPad X1 Yoga combo notebook with an OLED screen a few weeks ago. Both notebooks provide a very brilliant color, the picture is full of vitality, more vivid than most of the previous notebooks, but from a brightness point of view, it still does not seem like a traditional LCD display.

Lenovo official said that ThinkPad X1 Yoga OLED screen maximum brightness of 300 nit, and this is a very good performance for the notebook. However, through actual testing, the actual maximum brightness has shrunk by about 20%, and most of the time, it has not reached this standard.

When testing the brightness, we set the entire screen to Bath, and then moved the test tool to the four corners of the screen. The maximum brightness value of the entire screen is 236 nit.

When only one small window is white, the maximum brightness rises to 305 nits, and in the X1 Yoga test of ordinary LED backlight, whether the white is full screen or window, it is always kept at 296 nit.

Another Alienware 13 OLED screen has a similar performance, the brightness changes from 289 to 296nit, and the brightness of ordinary LCD screen is always maintained at 400nit.

Why does the brightness of the OLED screen become higher when it is not full-screen white? The reason lies in the principle of light emission of OLED panels and ordinary LCD panels.

The LCD screen used by ordinary laptops is backlit, and if the operating system needs to output 100% brightness, the backlight will be raised to its maximum value. Because of the setting of the backlight, there is no problem of inconsistency in the brightness of different screen parts. As long as it is set to 300 nit, no matter what part, it is to maintain uniform brightness.

How OLEDs work

The OLED panel is also displayed by each pixel's own individual light emission. We can imagine that once it was dissatisfied with the wall of the LED light bulb, all the pixel light sources were illuminated by their own brightness.

In order to reduce power consumption, the OLED screen can reduce its own maximum brightness according to the amount of light and pixels required. The white light of each pixel of the OLED screen may reduce the brightness, especially when the surrounding is black. Since the black and white contrast does not require such a high brightness, it usually cannot reach such a high level. In addition, doing so can also extend the battery life, especially when using dark or black subjects, can achieve very low power consumption.

In real life, we cannot freely choose the percentage of APL, and it is based on your different operations. According to Soneira, the APL of text documents on white backgrounds and black fonts is about 90%, while photographs and videos are usually on the order of 15%-25%, while the full-screen pages are at about 1080p resolution, which is about 65%.

Is brightness important?

When it comes to OLED screen notebooks or other devices, brightness is usually not the most important factor. However, the low brightness does not mean that the OLED screen is always inferior to the LCD screen in brightness.
